Chargers shoot down Lions, winning 4-2

Both clubs played to a very responsive Wednesday night crowd to start the 7 pm game in the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse. Luke Vanantwerp made a measly 19 saves for the Carroll Chargers. Drew Baumert was pelted with shots and made 43 saves to keep his Leo Lions in it.

First Period

The Chargers would start the scoring with Carter Overbay’s first goal of the season, a tap in shoulder side on Drew Baumert with assists from Davis Cline and Mikey Baldwin. The Lions would head to the penalty box first, as Austin Amick would get called for interference a minute after Carroll scored their goal. The Lions would tie up the score at 8:22 as Schwartz and Hendricks dazzled together once more. Leo would be penalized again; this time, Riley Murphy would get a roughing call with about 5 minutes left. Carroll thought they scored at 4:34, but the officials immediately washed out the goal, citing that the net had come off before the puck went in. Carroll would take two quick penalties to end the first period, Sam Krauhs went off for a trip at 2:55, and Camden Blauvelt was called for interference at 2:37. Carroll ended the first with 13 shots on net, and Leo had 5.

Second Period

Tyson Finefrock would put the Lions back in the penalty box for an elbowing call. Carroll would score their first and only power-play goal as Davis Cline got assists from Carter Gnau and Finn Cupp. Carroll charged forward again with another quick goal from Dylan Braun, Sammy Phillips, and Carter Gnau. Braun could pick up the puck as Baumert tried to poke-check it away. Jonah Haines and the Leo Lions played a bit back on their heels, still full of steam, but that led them to a roughing call at 9:36. Dylan Braun got his second of the night with the same two men with the helpers. Braun was able to tap in the puck that was slid to him from Gnau. Leo would take the last penalty of the period as Jackson Rieth was penalized for high sticking.

Third Period

The third period went by quickly and without a whole lot of fanfare. Dylan Carteaux would force Carroll to the box for roughing at 14:19. It would take 7 minutes and 30 seconds before something else would happen. Alex Hendricks scored with an assist from Sammy Schwartz and Amick to bring the score to 4-2. Play was behind Vanantwerp, and Schwartz could bat it in front to Hendricks. Leo would take the final penalty of the contest with 39 seconds left to go, and Hudson Roth would get charged with roughing. Carroll had a total shot count of 47. Leo had 21 shots in the match.
