Memorial Cup Finals Preview

The defensive Leo Lions will take on the offensive superpower Carroll Chargers on Saturday, February 18, to see who will get crowned victor of the Fort Wayne Amateur Hockey Association. The Carroll Chargers hope to continue their undefeated streak after winning the Roy Chin Cup as regular season champions.

How We Got Here

The first match of the Semi-Finals showed the fight that the Chargers had to face against the Fort Wayne Vipers. The Vipers played a game of retaliation when it came to the goals put on the scoreboard. The Chargers were playing hockey from behind, which led to their favour as they were able to tie the game and score the game-winner in OT. Carter Gnau scored the finishing for Carroll to make it a 4-3 contest, 21 seconds in and allowed them a visit to the Memorial Cup Finals.

Leo on the other hand had a much easier time, knocking out the Homestead Spartans by a score of 5-0. The Lions walked through both Spartan goaltenders and played some shutdown defense. Points were spread across the Lions roster with seven different players getting their stick on the puck.

Regular Season Matchup

Carroll won all five regular-season meetings against Leo, but these two teams were Number 1 and Number 2 all season long. Carroll went 15-0-0 and Leo went 8-7-0. The Chargers managed to outscore the Lions 29-8. 1380 was able to broadcast three of those meetings throughout the season.

Potential Goalie Matchup

Carroll: Carson Carteaux. Keeping with the hot hand seems to be the best idea for both of these clubs. Carteaux let in 3 goals in his last game on Wednesday, and faced 31 shots, but has proved time and time again that he is a consistent goaltender. He leads the Fort Wayne League in almost all aspects and has two shutouts on the season.

Leo: Drew Baumert. Baumert is coming off a 32-save shutout against the Spartans, but the Chargers are a whole new beast. The Chargers are roughly averaging about 36 shots a game. Baumert flashed the leather multiple times against the Spartans, the only question will be if he can do it again.
