Spacemen eyeing third in regular season finale

The Fort Wayne Spacemen of the US Premier Hockey League are wrapping up their inaugural season with the final two games of an 11-game homestand Friday and Sunday at the SportOne Parkview IceHouse, with a chance to move up in the standings.

Coach Kaleigh Schrock says they’re trying to make the most of a seven-game winning streak as they take on the Metro Jets Developmental Program (Friday, 7:30pm) and the MidWest Blackbirds (Sunday, 6pm):

“We’re looking at an opportunity to lock up third place,” he says. “MJDP has a game in hand against us. If we can find a way to win that one, and find a way to win on Sunday, we’d need MJDP to drop a game against Lansing. We’re trying to just continue to play the same way we’ve been playing.”

After this weekend, the Spacemen will look at starting the first round of the playoffs at home – with game 1 on February 28th at 9pm, game two on 2/29 at 4pm, and game three (if necessary) on March 1st at 3pm – against either MidWest or the Detroit Fighting Irish. It’ll be a best-of-three series, with the second round being against another division opponent as well, either at home or on the road. The following and final rounds will be held in Boston.

Schrock adds that plans are in the works to honor Spacemen captain Jared Fisher, who recently broke the USPHL records for goals scored in a single season and cumulative points in a single season, in a special on-ice ceremony, although he wasn’t sure if that would be during this last weekend of the regular season or during the opening round of the playoffs.

“He’s obviously been a big part of our success, not only in the stats he’s put up and as a leader, but also in recruiting. He’s such a good person that, when other players learn he’s here, they wanted to join the party. He’s a fun kid to be around. We owe it to him to honor him not just because he deserves it, but because of the guy he is.”
