Hall of Fame sportscaster Doc Emrick retires

A longtime pro hockey broadcaster with Fort Wayne roots is calling it a career.

Mike Emrick, known as “Doc” to millions of hockey fans, announced his retirement this morning.

Emrick grew up in La Fontaine, graduated from Manchester University in 1968, and was a fan of the Fort Wayne Komets, learning the trade of sports play-by-play in part from WOWO Komets broadcaster Bob Chase.

Among numerous awards, including six Emmys, the 74-year-old Emrick is also a member of both the Fort Wayne Komets Hall of Fame and the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.
